Metabolism at the Hub of Cancer and Immunity

2023 SCION Faculty & Organizers

Immunometabolism is an exciting field with several critical connections to cancer immunology, most notably through studies of immune cell, cancer cell, and microbiome metabolism. The program will feature in-depth discussions into the latest scientific insights on the impact of metabolism on cancer and immunity and the newest translational studies investigating how reprogramming metabolic pathways can improve immunotherapies like cell therapies or checkpoint blockade.

Basic, translational, and clinical scientists in attendance will benefit as they learn more about the fast-paced and exciting field of immunometabolism and its impact in the field of cancer immunotherapy. 

Keynote

Hongbo Chi, Ph.DHongbo Chi, PhD received his PhD from the University of Rochester, and his postdoctoral training with Dr. Richard Flavell from Yale University School of Medicine. In 2007, he started his independent research program at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, where he is currently a member (professor) in the Department of Immunology, and Robert G. Webster Endowed Chair in Immunology. His research focuses on immunometabolism, in particular metabolic reprogramming of immune cell fate. Among the highlights of the work, his laboratory has discovered the critical importance of... mTOR and nutrient signaling in T cells and dendritic cells, the control of T cell quiescence and antigen-triggered exit from quiescence, and the metabolic pathways underpinning cancer immunity and autoimmunity. More recently, his laboratory applies systems biology and functional genomics approaches to reconstruct metabolic signaling circuits and identify new therapeutic targets in cancer and other immune-mediated diseases. His work is highly regarded and widely referenced, earning him a place on the 2020–2022 Highly Cited Researchers lists. He has recently received an NIAID R37 merit award and an NCI R35 outstanding investigator award.

Target Audience

The target audience for this program includes clinical, basic and translational researchers from academic, industry, or government settings with an interest in the relationship between metabolism, cancer biology, microbiome, and anti-cancer immunity.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the roles of immune, microbiome, and cancer metabolism in the treatment of cancer with immunotherapy
  • Outline methods to investigate how metabolism impacts cancer and immune cell differentiation and function
  • Analyze therapeutic approaches to reprogram metabolic processes to improve cancer immunotherapies

Enduring Materials

  • Those registered for the 2024 SITC Spring Scientific will have access to enduring materials (video recordings) of the sessions within 48 hours after each session on the virtual platform.
  • Registrants will have access to enduring materials (video recordings only) on the virtual meeting platform for four weeks after the program. After that time, registrants will still have access to the content (both video recordings and slides), as permitted by presenters, on the SITC Resource Library.
  • At four weeks after the program, non-registrants will be able to purchase access to enduring materials (video recordings and slides), including access to abstracts, as permitted by presenters, on the SITC Resource Library. Non-registrants can purchase access to the enduring materials at 50% of the registration rates.
  • One year after the program, enduring materials, as permitted by presenters, will be open access to the public.

Photography Policy and Meeting Code of Conduct 

SITC often employs the services of a professional photographer/videographer at SITC events to capture images and audiovisual (AV) recordings for use in society archival and promotional material. Your attendance at SITC events implies your permission for images and an AV recording captured to be used for purposes of SITC archival materials, promotional materials, and publications, and waives your rights for compensation or ownership of these images.

COVID-19 Measures 

At SITC programs, our goal is to have a safe and meaningful in-person experience. SITC will refer to the CDC COVID-19 Community Levels to guide health precautions for in-person meetings. In addition, SITC strongly recommends that in-person meeting attendees take the following precautions:

·        Stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations

·        Take a rapid COVID test prior to attending a meeting and do not attend in person if you test positive

·        Do not attend the meeting if you have symptoms that could be consistent with a “cold” or any other respiratory infection and leave the meeting if you develop such symptoms

·        Wear a mask in crowded indoor settings 

·        Follow all health and safety protocols as required by SITC and local and state health departments

·        Review current CDC and applicable local guidance for protecting yourself from COVID-19.

Attendees will have access to the meeting content online if they are unable to attend in person due to illness or a positive COVID test. For hybrid programs, attendees can change from in-person to online-only registration by contacting events@sitcancer.org.

Registered attendees will be notified in advance of any changes to precautions, recommendations or requirements for a SITC meeting.

Cancellation / Refund Policy 

Refund requests should be submitted in writing to the SITC office at events@sitcancer.org by February 19, 2024. A $25 processing fee will be charged for all paid registrations. All refunds will be processed within two weeks of receipt. No refunds will be granted if cancellation is received after February 19, 2024.

Submit Your Research

The SITC Spring Scientific will feature abstracts with the latest, cutting-edge data on metabolism and cancer immunity. Clinical, translational, or basic science researchers who study immune cell, cancer cell, and microbiome metabolism are encouraged to submit an abstract. Encore presentations are also welcome.

Abstract Presentation Information

Oral Abstract Presentation Information
Up to 18 oral abstract presentations are available during the Spring Scientific.

Poster Abstract Presentation Information
Poster presentations are available. Posters will be presented during lunch Sunday, March 10 and Monday, March 11 and during an evening poster reception on Sunday, March 10. 

Poster specifications will be based on the number of abstracts that will be presented and will be provided with acceptance notifications. The presenting author is responsible for printing, bringing and hanging up their poster. SITC does not provide printing services on-site, or special accommodations for disposing of or shipping posters after the workshop.

Spring Scientific Abstract Awards 

To recognize and support outstanding abstract submissions, SITC will offer five Abstract Awards. The awardees will be selected by the Program Organizers from the top scored abstracts. Those selected will receive complimentary registration to the Spring Scientific, as well as a certificate and a poster ribbon. 

Two of the five awards will be reserved for those who self-identify as individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in the Biomedical Sciences according to the NIH definition. The information collected in response to the self-identifying process will only be viewed by SITC staff and program organizers.
